Please close the door

Rohan was frustrated, tired, irritated but most of all he was lonely. His work was tough, boring and extremely unimaginative. He could not believe he had let himself in the this of his own volition. He walked in the flats he lived in and groggily got on to the lift. He lived on the 12th floor and the lift being an old one took an incredibly long time getting there. As usual, he was alone in the lift. His cohabitors in this huge anthill of humans seemed to be forever deserted. He closed the door quickly. The lift had an irritating tendency to announce ' please close the door' as soon as the gates were opened. As he passed the first floor, he saw the Sharma hoemstead. The door was always open. Didn't they ever feel the need for some privacy? A frown slowly built over his face.
" Why are you looking so worried?" The voice was feminine yet android. He looked around to see from where it emanated.
" Dont look around. I am the lift. And no you havent gone mad. You seemed very lonely, felt like talking to you"
Rohan was dumbstruck. He looked around again wondering if someone was playing a cruel joke on him.
" Hey, I told you I am the lift. Now tell me why are you so worried? "
" I am worried because my life is going nowhere. I am stuck in a job which doesn't interest me. I am sick of it down to my feet. I want to get out and do nature photography, something which interests me. I want to marry the girl I love. I want to get out of this crowded city."
" Then why dont you just do it?"
" I have always let down my parents in my life. This is the first decent job I am holding and If I leave it...."
" Life is too short to accomodate everybody's dreams. Just follow your own, the others may fall in line. I am sure all your parents want is your happiness."
" But what do I do? Leave this job. Who will hire me as a photographer with no experience? "
" If you believe in yourself, go chase your dreams. Till then you can just sleep through it."
The lift lurched to a stop. Rohan had reached 12th floor. He hazily opened the gate.
" And remember, Please close the door."

As you can guess, Rohan left the city the next day. He struggled for years before finally making a mark as a nature photographer.
He returned 13 years later to that same building of flats. It looked just the same. He went in with eager anticipation. And he stared. There was brand new lift with automatic doors. There was a watchman now. Obviously the flats were going upscale.
" What happened to the old lift" he enquired.
" Old lift? Bhaiyya, this building did not have a lift till 3 years ago. You must be mistaken."
" Nonsense. I used to live here 13 years ago and there was lift at that time."
" I know Bhaiyya. Dont you remeber me. I am Sharma ji's younger son, Chotu."
" Uh, no"
" You dont remember? Well I do. How you used to climb 12 floors everyday. We used to see you everyday from our open door. Dont you remember telling my father the day you ran away with my mother - ' For heavens please close your door'?
